Competition Day - Regional Win

Earlier today, nine of us went to the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, in Didcot, to compete in our regional FLL. Core values was first, at 10:15, and went quite well, with us all saying things and our pre-prepared poster helping us out too. We achieved second place in the core values ranking.

Next, as 12:00, we had our first robot game, which went terribly. Because there was no practice table and we didn't have enough pre-game time, we weren't able to calibrate our colour sensors and turning constant, so none of our movement worked properly. We scored zero (although also had three penalties for interruption).

At 13:00, we had robot design, and this went amazingly. The judges were very impressed - especially with the robustness of our robot and the modular, fully-commented code (which is available, open-source, on GitHub). We ranked second on this and received comments from the judges afterwards that our robot and coding were exceptional.

Next was another robot game session, where we scored 74 points, after a lot of our code again failed - mainly due to turning.

This was followed by our project presentation; we felt this went really well - but we didn't rank in the top three for this discipline.

Our last session was at 2:45 - the last of the day - and was another robot game session, in which we scored 94 points. This brought us into second place in the robot game, beating Brainstorm by one point.

After not receiving any specific discipline rewards (e.g. project, robot design), none of us were expecting to win the overall trophy, and were all very shocked when we were announced as the winners!

New Year's Greetings! FLL Nationals After a long break (with one one meet up) the team was back together and was ready to resume coding and building.We worked on missions and one of our coders was attempting to make a cubic equation in order to calculate turning values after line following for mission 9 (Safety factor). Also, we have worked on mission 12 (Design and Build) and now have increased our height of blocks to make the maximum possible height of stacks we can. FLL Rerun Shortly before the holidays, the participants were introduced to the FLL map and mission models; in preparation for the rerun that they would be doing. Today, they were showed our robot that we use in FLL and had a chance to look and take ideas from it. They also had a more detailed rundown of the mat and mission models with also some very successful examples of missions being done.

Nationals Week 1 - 1

Immediate Responses FLL The first Wednesday back was very effective, we practised some more, did some more coding and improved our score to reach 300 every time. We focused on the missions we had already done in the regional competition and memorised the placings. Next we focused on the missions that we bailed on but could be able to do in the same run as other missions, such as the building demolishing and the elevator along with the swing. They are not guaranteed points yet but soon will be as more tests are done and the code is improved. This week also we switched from block EV3 coding to the Micro-Python coding for EV3, this made our coding process very efficient as all members of the Black Thunder team are good in Python. We also restarted the gyro-bot project to show off in the nationals. Nationals Week 2 - 1

Re-coding FLL Over the weekend most of the bot code was deleted and then coded in python, this allows us to improve acceleration, deceleration, turning and also how controlled the runs are. The rest of the code such as the swing and elevator which we abandoned half-way through the regional competition still needs to be translated into python code. Gyro-boy is being vastly improved to show-off in nationals, we are hoping we can wow the judges through this small project and to also because when competition is high, Black Thunder are at their prime. SUMO Competiton The competitors are making general repairs in the first half of the session then will be participating in battles for the second half. The competitors have formed a close bond and if we compare them from when they started and when they are now, its a vast improvement in their ability to think outside the box think of innovative ways to solve problem caused by there improvements.
